Cutting emissions in textiles and garments an urgent task
The textile and garment sector is one of Vietnam’s main export industries but the energy required for production results in substantial greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, reducing emissions in the sector is one of Vietnam’s pressing tasks in reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, as committed to at COP26. There are currently some 294 enterprises in textile, garment, and footwear industries that must conduct a greenhouse gas inventory under Decree No. 06 on the mitigation of emissions and protection of the ozone layer. Decree No. 06 provides a specific roadmap for businesses, including textile and garment enterprises, on providing operational data and related information for a greenhouse gas inventory. The government must therefore plan industrial parks specifically for textiles and garments that also meet wastewater treatment standards.
