                                                              The importance of credit institutions to a country’s economy
                                                              requires  updated  legal  instruments  governing  their
                                                              establishment and activities. The Law on Credit Institutions
                                                              first came into being in 2010 and was amended in 2017, but
                                                              Vietnam’s development and a changing world have rendered
                                                              certain provisions outdated or unworkable. Enter the Law
                                                              on  Credit  Institutions  2024,  passed  by  the  National
                                                              Assembly on January 18. At a VET / VnEconomy dialogue on
                                                              February 3 that shone a spotlight on its new provisions,
                                                              many analysts noted that cross-ownership and the possible
                                                              manipulation of banks have been given particular focus, with
                                                              ownership ratios adjusted to ensure that healthy credit
                                                              flows into and around Vietnam’s economy and that credit
                                                              institutions serve their intended purpose.
